Feasts of Christ Traveling Icon
Ca. 1800
7" x 16.25"
Icons, brass with enamel
Region: Russia
Portable travel icons arose out of the need of the faithful to have the consolation of the holy image with them during trips, which in earlier times-and often even today--presented danger for body and soul. There is evidence in the icons preserved at Mount Sinai that travel icons existed in the sixth and seventh centuries, but they likely existed even earlier. This polyptych traveling icon is composed of four panels with narrative biblical scenes.
