As the Greek designation "stavrothek" suggests, this icon is a "cross case," or, a reliquary containing a piece of the cross. such cruciform reliquaries were made of costly wood or metals and decorated with scenes from the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. . The removable crucifix would have once covered and protected a small piece of the original cross.
