About the Artist
(1899 - 1976)
A native New Mexican, Herman Bacharach was a prolific artist, illustrator and book designer, particularly of children’s literature. He worked for the Grosset & Dunlap and Houghton Mifflin publishing houses and and illustrated classic works such as ‘The Adventures of Pinocchio,’ 1927, and ‘Robinson Crusoe,’ 1929. He was employed by the Works Progression Administration (WPA) and worked in a variety of media including woodcut and linocut. Bacharach’s own collection of illustrated books is held at the New Mexico State Library.
