Images of Christ are among the most widely produced in the world of art. The sculptors of the viceregal period considered ivory one of the more appropriate materials for rendering Christ, for reasons of texture and color. During the early years of Spanish dominion, ivory arrived from Europe. However the establishment of an alternate commercial route between Acapulco and the Philippines was highly favorable for Asian merchandise.
