In this lovely scene, the Virgin is interceding on behalf of a soul. The recently deceased lays in a bed at the foot of the painting where the devil leans over him to whisper temptation. But the Virgin, always good, sends Michael the Archangel down to protect the soul of the dead. Surrounded by a aureola of light, Latin scripts on ribbons wind to and from her supplicants, which include a congregation of angels to the left, the martyrs to the right, the trinity above, and the deceased below.
