Mexican-born painter Juan Correa was active in Mexico City between 1667 and 1716. Born to a family of artisans, he produced many prominent altarpieces for the churches of Mexico City, including La Iglesia de San Pablo, La Iglesia de San Pedro, and La Iglesia de Veracruz.

This superb painting depicts the honoring of one of the central rites of the Catholic Church: the Eucharist, or the transsubstantiated Body and Blood of Christ, here seen in an elaborate monstrance.
