St. Francis of Assisi, Founder of the Franciscan Order and patron saint of New Mexico, is known for his devout emulation of the suffering of Christ. He is depicted as the ideal penitent, bearing the stigmata and meditating upon the cross and upon a human skull-symbol of the impermanence of human life.
