Region: Peru
Venerations and celebrations of Cristo de los Temblores originated in 1650 when purportedly an oil painting of Christ protected the major city of Cuzco from the terrible ruin of an earthquake. This celebration is still observed in present-day Peru, and a giant crucifixion is paraded through the streets, adorned with candles and red flowers, symbolizing the blood of Christ.
