The image of the Holy Family as a model for Christian families on earth had been promoted in the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries by missionaries, especially intent on converting native people to Catholic doctrine and Christian morality. A tableau such as this one may have held a prominent place in a domestic "oratyo," a private oratory where devotional art was displayed.
