La Sagrada Familia
18th Century
42.12" x 92.12"
Painting, oil on canvas
Region: Bolivia
Painted on the high altiplano of colonial Bolivia, this painting of the holy family is overflowing with exquisite surface patterns distinct to this region. In the true Andean style, the artist chose to minimize the sacred family as a small and delicate vignette in the center, surrounding the scene with vigorously growing flowers and vines that seem to celebrate the young christ-child and family. This painting was originally an altar frontispiece, and would have been made to inspire prayer and devotion of local parishioners in the Bolivian high plateau. Today it stands as a testament to the vibrant, unique Andean style that characterized these isolated mountain regions.
