Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the patroness of the Carmelite Order, established in Europe during the Middle Ages. She offers the scapulars (the membership badge of the Order) to souls in purgatory, providing them with a means of salvation which exemplifies her merciful role. Devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel was perpetuated in Mexico and New Mexico by the lay sisters of the Order, known as Carmelitas, who in many churches established and maintained altars dedicated to her.
